Ghana has several coins and notes that are officially part of its currency system. However, some of them have become very rare from daily use.
Even though they are still legal and accepted by law, people do not use them anymore. This may be due to inflation and how prices of goods and services have increased over time.
One of the coins that is missing from the system is the 1 pesewa coin. Years ago, this coin was common. People used it to buy small items like toffees or chewing gum. But today, it is almost impossible to find a 1 pesewa coin. Many shops, traders, and even banks do not accept or use it anymore.
Another coin that is missing is the 5 pesewas coin. Just like the 1 pesewa, this coin is no longer used in the market. It used to help in giving change when people bought things. Now, most sellers round up prices to avoid using these small coins.
The 10 pesewas coin is still officially in the system, but it is also very scarce. You hardly see it in circulation. Most Ghanaians do not carry it in their wallets or purses anymore, and it is rarely given as change in shops or transport.
One note that is almost missing is the 2 cedis note. Some years ago, it was very common and helpful in buying small items or paying for transportation. But now, it has become very hard to find. Instead, people use the 1 cedi and 5 cedi notes more often.
The disappearance of these coins and notes may be caused by inflation. As prices go higher, the value of smaller coins becomes too low to buy anything. This makes people stop using them.
Even though the 1 pesewa, 5 pesewas, 10 pesewas, and 2 cedi note are still part of Ghana’s currency, they are slowly disappearing from the system.
