A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, of spreading false information about the state of the cedi-dollar exchange rate when the NDC came into power.
In a Facebook post on Friday, 9th May, 2025, Mr. Aboagye stated clearly that the NDC took over from the NPP with the exchange rate at GHS 14.75 to $1, as reported by the Bank of Ghana on January 8, 2025. He explained that the rate on December 31, 2024, just a few days before the handover, was GHS 14.70.
According to him, the current government—under the NDC—has allowed the exchange rate to rise from 14.75 to 15.52 between January and mid-April 2025. He added that while the NDC is now trying to stabilize the currency, it is dishonest for them to pretend the situation was worse when they came into office.
Mr. Aboagye warned the NDC to stop using lies and propaganda, saying these tactics might have helped them win power but won’t keep them in office. He stressed that being in government means taking full responsibility for the economy.
He also mentioned that even though he agrees that the performance of the cedi is the responsibility of the current government, the facts must be respected. “Let the records show that the NDC inherited an exchange rate of 14.75 and not 16,” he said.
Mr. Aboagye advised the NDC to stop talking and start working. He reminded them that the exchange rate under the NPP on May 9, 2024, was GHS 13.67, and asked the current government to focus on improving the situation rather than blaming others.
