The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has shared his thoughts on the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government.
In a Facebook post on Friday, 9th May, 2025, the Speaker praised the government’s economic performance and described the recovery of the cedi as a sign of good leadership.
According to Bloomberg, the Ghana cedi is currently the strongest currency in the world, trading at around 13 cedis to 1 US dollar. This has brought relief to many Ghanaians, especially traders who import goods from other countries.
Mr. Bagbin said the rise in the value of the cedi is already helping cross-border traders save money. He noted that, for the first time in a long while, traders are beginning to reduce the prices of their goods and services. This, he believes, will help ordinary Ghanaians afford more and improve the general cost of living.
He also stated that many people are now more willing to accept payments in cedis, which shows trust in the local currency. This change, according to him, is good for businesses and for the economy as a whole.
Speaker Bagbin added that these improvements are happening just a few months after the Mahama administration took over. He believes the “reset agenda” of the NDC government is working and called on Ghanaians to continue supporting efforts to make Ghana and Africa better.
Many Ghanaians have also taken to social media to express their joy and support for the improvement in the cedi’s performance, with hopes that the gains will be sustained in the coming months.
