According to a report by the Ghana Armed Forces on Thursday, 8th May, 2025, the United States (US) has donated 14 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to help strengthen Ghana’s security.
The vehicles were officially handed over by the US Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Virginia Palmer, on behalf of the US government. The ceremony took place at the 153 Armoured Regiment, Abuga Square in Burma Camp, Accra.
During the event, Ambassador Palmer said that the donation is part of the United States’ ongoing support to help Ghana deal with security challenges, especially in the northern part of the country. She explained that protecting Ghana’s northern border has become very important due to the growing threats in the region. These include the spread of terrorism and violent attacks from neighboring countries in the Sahel region.
Ambassador Palmer stated that the United States is committed to working with Ghana to improve its defense systems. She added that this partnership would continue through training programs, supply of important equipment, and capacity-building projects to strengthen the country’s ability to protect its people.
The Minister for Defence, Honourable Dr Edward Omane Boamah, was present at the ceremony and thanked the US government and the American people for their generous support. He said the donation would help Ghana better respond to threats and keep its borders secure. He also promised that the Ghana Armed Forces would take good care of the vehicles and use them for their intended purpose.
This donation is seen as a sign of the strong friendship between Ghana and the United States. It also shows both countries’ shared goal of promoting peace and safety in West Africa and around the world. The new vehicles are expected to improve the movement and safety of Ghanaian soldiers, especially in high-risk areas.
