In a video shared by Ghanaian journalist on Friday, 9th May, 2025, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, was seen crying during an interview.
During the interview, Afenyo-Markin talked about a very sad time in his life, which is the death of his only sister, Mawusi. He shared memories of his childhood and how he and his sister were raised by their grandmother. According to him, his sister fell seriously ill when they were children. But instead of taking her to the hospital, their grandmother chose to pray for her healing.
He said things got worse when his sister couldn’t walk anymore and started crawling. One day, she crawled and suddenly fell to her side. That moment frightened their grandmother so much that she finally decided to take her to a nearby clinic that very night.
“We spent the whole night at the clinic, and by morning, she was my only sister,” Afenyo-Markin said, holding back tears. “Then we were told she had died. They tied her body and wrapped her up.” The MP could not hold back his emotions as he remembered that heartbreaking moment.
After his sister passed away, Afenyo-Markin said he was sent to live with his grandfather, who took him along on hunting trips. This helped him move forward, even though the pain of losing his sister has stayed with him for many years.
The touching video has gone viral online, and many Ghanaians are praising him for opening up about such a painful part of his past. Some have taken to social media to share their support and encourage him to stay strong.
