Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the minister in charge of government communications, has denied claims that President John Dramani Mahama wants to run for a third term in office.
According to him, these claims are lies being spread by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to mislead the public.
Speaking in an interview on UTV on Friday, 9th May, 2025, Kwakye Ofosu said, “No, I know him for at least 20 years. If we speak of someone who is humble, he is the one. NPP are only spreading ridiculous lies. He has no plans to go for a third term.”
He explained that Ghana’s constitution does not allow any president to serve more than two terms. For this to change, two-thirds of Ghanaians must support a constitutional amendment. “The only way the constitution can be changed for such a thing to happen is when two-thirds of Ghanaians vote in favour,” he said. “There is no way it will happen in Ghana because no party will ever get a two-thirds vote. He will hand over,” Kwakye Ofosu added.
His comments come after the NPP accused President Mahama of trying to influence the judiciary by changing Supreme Court judges. According to the NPP, this is part of a plan to change the constitution and allow Mahama to seek a third term.
However, Kwakye Ofosu strongly rejected these accusations. He said President Mahama respects Ghana’s democracy and the rule of law. He also said Mahama will peacefully hand over power when his time is up, as required by the constitution.
Many Ghanaians are watching the situation closely as the political debate continues.
