Many Ghanaians are talking about whether Sammy Gyamfi should stay in government or be sacked. This comes after a video of him went viral showing him counting what looks like $800 and giving it to Nana Agradaa, a controversial religious figure.
People are now questioning whether his actions match the rules set by President John Mahama for his appointees.
Dr. Frank Bannor, a development economist and senior researcher at the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy, has asked President Mahama to take action. This is according to a report by TV3 on Sunday, 11th May, 2025.
He says if the president is serious about fighting corruption and wants to protect the country’s money, then Sammy Gyamfi must be removed from office immediately.
Dr. Bannor reminded the public that President Mahama recently introduced a Code of Ethics for his appointees. In that document, the President clearly said that anyone in government who lives a flashy or extravagant lifestyle will be sacked right away. According to Dr. Bannor, Sammy Gyamfi has clearly gone against these rules, so Mahama must now prove he truly stands by his word.
He also quoted parts of the President’s speech: “The hallmark of this government will be modesty and respect for the Ghanaian people. The resources you work with belong to the citizens. They must not be wasted on luxury.”
Dr. Bannor added that this is a big test for President Mahama to show if he really means what he says about protecting the public purse and fighting corruption.
Many people on social media have joined the conversation. Some are calling for Sammy Gyamfi to resign or be sacked, saying his actions are unacceptable and against the President’s values. Others are waiting to see what Mahama will do next.
