Kennedy Agyapong has taken to social media to mock investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas after a U.S. court drastically reduced an $18 million defamation award against him to just $500.
The legal battle between the two public figures began after Anas sued Kennedy Agyapong for defamation in a U.S. court. A jury earlier found Agyapong guilty of maliciously defaming Anas and awarded the journalist $18 million in damages. The decision was seen by many as a major victory for Anas.
However, Agyapong’s legal team argued that the amount was too much and asked the court to reduce it. The judge agreed with their argument, calling the $18 million amount “excessive.” While the court maintained that Kennedy Agyapong defamed Anas, it reduced the financial penalty to just $500.
Reacting to the ruling, Anas said the case was never about money but about defending truth and justice. According to him, not even one of the allegations made against him by Kennedy Agyapong was proven in court.
“Our victory is in the judgment and not the award,” Anas stated. He added that he would appeal the judge’s decision and remain committed to his fight against corruption. “I will continue to name, shame, and jail,” he declared.
Despite the court’s confirmation that he defamed Anas, Kennedy Agyapong appeared unbothered. In a viral video shared online, he laughed at the reduced fine and sarcastically said, “Maybe we should give Anas $5,000.”
The video has attracted a lot of attention, with many people in Ghana reacting both in support of and against Agyapong’s comments.
This court decision marks an important turn in the long-standing feud between the controversial politician and the undercover journalist, both known for their bold approaches to exposing wrongdoing.
