Veteran journalist and political analyst, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has reacted to the sad news of the death of Ghanaian football legend Wilberforce Kwadwo Mfum. The former Black Stars striker was reported dead at the age of 89.
Kwesi Pratt shared his thoughts on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, 15th May 2025. In his post, he praised the football icon and shared memories of Mfum’s powerful style of play.
“Wilberforce Kwadwo Mfum is reported dead,” Kwesi Pratt wrote. “He was a striker of the Black Stars who was noted for the extraordinary power in his feet. His powerful shots tore the nets behind the goal posts, and goalkeepers were very careful about catching balls shot from his feet.”
According to Pratt, Mfum was a very big name in Ghana football during his time. He was mentioned in the same league as other football greats like Aggrey Fynn, Osei Kofi, and Frank Odoi.
Kwesi Pratt ended his post by sending his deep condolences to the family and friends of the late footballer. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Wilberforce Mfum, a football legend,” he wrote.
Wilberforce Mfum was well known for his time with the Black Stars and Asante Kotoko. He played a key role in Ghana’s victory at the 1963 Africa Cup of Nations. His strong and accurate shots made him a feared striker across the continent.
Many Ghanaians have joined in mourning the legend. Social media has been filled with tributes and messages of sympathy. Fans, football lovers, and the Ghana Football Association have all paid their respects.
