John Evans Ayerakwa Kumordzie, a former Ghana Police Service detective, has officially been confirmed as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akuapem North.
This appointment marks a significant milestone for Kumordzie, who resigned from the police force in 2019 to actively campaign for President John Mahama and has since pursued a political career.
Police officer who resigned to campaign for Mahama confirmed Akuapem North MCE
Kumordzie’s confirmation comes as part of President Mahama’s broader nomination of 33 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) for Ghana’s Eastern Region. The Akuapem North Assembly overwhelmingly approved his appointment with 32 votes in favor and 16 against, representing 66.7% of the valid votes cast.
Prior to this appointment, Kumordzie had attempted to enter Parliament as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Okere Constituency in the 2020 general elections. Despite a strong campaign, he lost to the incumbent Dan Botwe. Undeterred, Kumordzie shifted his political focus to Akuapem North in 2024, where he again contested for the parliamentary seat but was defeated by the New Patriotic Party’s Sammy Awuku.
Kumordzie’s transition from law enforcement to politics officially began in 2019 when he resigned from the Ghana Police Service. His resignation letter was submitted to then Inspector-General of Police David Asante-Apeatu, in accordance with the Police Service Act, clearing the way for his political ambitions.
Following his confirmation, the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey Adjei, administered the oath of office and secrecy, officially swearing him in as the new MCE for Akuapem North.
This appointment highlights a growing trend of former security personnel moving into political roles, bringing with them a unique perspective shaped by their previous service. With his confirmation, Kumordzie now faces the task of steering development and governance in Akuapem North as the region looks forward to his leadership. As this story develops, many will be watching to see how Kumordzie leverages his experience and political journey to impact local governance in the Eastern Region.
