President John Dramani Mahama has revealed in a light-hearted manner that he has not yet received his salary since taking office.
While speaking at the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as the “Mahama Cares” Fund, he made a humorous comment directed at his Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah.
“Chief of Staff, what’s going on?” the President asked jokingly, making the audience laugh. He added that although he has already pledged to donate six months of his salary to the fund, he is still waiting for his first paycheck in order to fulfill that promise.
President Mahama explained that as soon as he receives his salary, he will write a cheque and officially donate the six-month amount to the Mahama Cares Fund. This donation is part of his commitment to support Ghanaians who are suffering from chronic illnesses such as kidney disease, cancer, heart conditions, and other non-communicable diseases.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was launched on April 29, 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). The fund is aimed at helping poor and vulnerable Ghanaians who cannot afford expensive treatments for serious medical conditions.
Apart from donating his own salary, President Mahama has also asked all government appointees to support the fund by donating one month of their salary. In addition, appointees who failed to declare their assets by the March 31 deadline will lose three more months’ salary, making it four months in total—all of which will be contributed to the Mahama Cares Fund.
This initiative shows the President’s deep concern for the health and well-being of citizens, especially those who are struggling to pay their hospital bills. The fund is expected to receive more support from businesses and individuals across the country.
