According to a report by GhOne TV on Friday, 16th May, 2025, the Accra High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the Director of Passports in Ghana. This decision was made after the Passport Office failed to explain how a suspect, who is currently on trial, was able to get more than one Ghanaian passport.
The court wants answers about how the suspect, whose name has not been made public, got several different passports even though it is illegal for one person to have more than one. The judge was not satisfied with the explanations given so far, and because no proper reason was provided by the Passport Office, the judge took strong action by ordering the arrest of the Director.
According to reports, the Director of Passports was invited by the court to explain how the suspect received multiple Ghanaian passports. However, the Director did not show up or send a representative to speak on the matter. The judge saw this as disrespect to the court and decided to issue the bench warrant.
The court believes that the Director of Passports needs to come and answer important questions. It is part of efforts to find out whether someone in the Passport Office helped the suspect break the law or if there was a mistake in the system. The suspect is already in court for another case, and the discovery of the multiple passports raised serious concerns.
This case has also brought public attention to the way Ghanaian passports are issued and whether there are strong enough checks to stop people from getting more than one. Many Ghanaians are calling on the government to investigate the Passport Office to stop such incidents from happening again.
