The Bank of Ghana has released the official exchange rates for major foreign currencies as of Friday, May 16, 2025. These rates are the average interbank rates used by commercial banks in Ghana when buying or selling foreign currencies at the close of business on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
According to the latest figures, the US dollar, British pound, and the euro remain the main currencies used in Ghana for international trade, travel, and financial transactions. Below are the buying and selling rates as released by the Bank of Ghana:
US Dollar (USD):
Buying Rate: GH¢12.3938
Selling Rate: GH¢12.4062
British Pound Sterling (GBP):
Buying Rate: GH¢16.4664
Selling Rate: GH¢16.4841
Euro (EUR):
Buying Rate: GH¢13.8594
Selling Rate: GH¢13.8732
These rates are used by banks to determine how much cedis customers will need to buy these foreign currencies or how much they will receive when they sell them.
The slight differences between the buying and selling rates show how banks make a small profit on each transaction. For example, if someone wants to buy one US dollar from the bank, they will pay GH¢12.4062. But if they are selling one US dollar to the bank, they will receive GH¢12.3938.
It is important for people who are traveling, doing business, or receiving money from abroad to check these rates regularly, as they can change slightly from day to day depending on economic conditions. The Bank of Ghana updates the exchange rates daily to reflect real market conditions and to guide both individuals and businesses.
