Ghana’s Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam, has explained why the Ghana cedi is performing strongly against the US dollar.
In a post shared on his Facebook page on Monday, May 19, 2025, Dr. Forson stated that the cedi has appreciated by 16.7% against the dollar since the beginning of the year. This makes the cedi the best-performing currency in the world in April 2025. He compared this to the same time last year when the cedi lost 13.4% of its value.
He said this big improvement is due to good economic policies from the government. The Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance have worked together to control the money in the system. At the same time, the Finance Ministry is spending wisely and managing the country’s money well.
Dr. Forson added that Ghana is receiving more foreign exchange from gold, cocoa, and money sent by Ghanaians living abroad. Also, the US dollar is not as strong as before, which is helping the cedi gain more value.
He assured Ghanaians that this good performance of the cedi is not temporary. In fact, Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves hit a record high in April 2025. These reserves even passed the goals set in the country’s deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), showing that the cedi’s rise is strong and sustainable.
Dr. Forson praised the work of the Ghana Gold Board and said their work will continue to help the cedi. He urged the new board members to work hard and support President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to rebuild the economy and bring growth to all Ghanaians.
