NPP’s PK Sarpong, has shared images of the private jet that brought Vice President Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang back to Ghana on his Facebook page. This has generated some reactions from Ghanaians.
Many people are talking about the luxurious nature of the jet, especially at a time when the country is facing serious economic problems.
On Thursday, 22nd May, 2025, the Vice President returned from the United Kingdom where she had gone for medical treatment. Before traveling abroad, she was first seen at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). According to government sources, she later continued her treatment in the UK for further medical care.
Her return was confirmed by President John Dramani Mahama during his Thank You Tour in Dodowa on Friday, May 16. The President said, “I’m happy to state that I spoke to her yesterday morning, and she will be back in the country before the end of next week. By God’s grace, she is fully recovered and she’s going to come and go back to her duties.”
Even though Ghanaians are happy to see the Vice President return healthy and strong, many are questioning the use of a private jet, especially under the current economic conditions. Critics argue that the NDC government is now doing what they used to condemn when they were in opposition.
While in opposition, the NDC, led by President Mahama and other top members, constantly criticised the NPP government, especially former President Nana Akufo-Addo, for spending too much on luxurious private jets during his travels. Now, with the NDC in power, some people are asking why the same party is using a similar means of transport.
So far, the government has not confirmed whether the private jet was used officially or who paid for it. But the issue has started a fresh debate about government spending and whether politicians truly lead by example.
