A disturbing video has gone viral on social media showing seven students from the Winneba Technical Institute brandishing weapons, including clubs and other dangerous objects.
The students, believed to be in their school uniforms, recorded themselves displaying these weapons in a threatening manner. The video has sparked anger and fear among the public, especially as Ghana continues to deal with growing concerns over student violence.
In the video, the students are seen making violent gestures and showing off their weapons with pride. Many Ghanaians have condemned the act, calling on school authorities and the Ghana Police Service to take immediate action. This shocking development follows closely after the recent shooting incident at Adventist Senior High School in the Ashanti Region, where a 16-year-old student accidentally shot a classmate in the eye with a locally made pistol. That victim is currently receiving medical treatment in the United Kingdom after intervention from businessman Ibrahim Mahama.
The Winneba video has further raised questions about how students are gaining access to weapons and what schools are doing to ensure safety on their campuses. Education watchers believe this growing trend, if not addressed, could lead to even more tragic incidents.
The Ghana Police Service is expected to investigate the video and identify the students involved. Carrying weapons is a criminal offense under Ghanaian law, and those found guilty could face serious punishment. Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed deep concern over the video and called for stricter discipline and security measures in all schools.
Parents, teachers, and school leaders are being urged to have open conversations with students about violence, peer pressure, and the legal consequences of carrying weapons. Schools are also encouraged to introduce counselling and behavior change programs to promote peace and safety.
