An accident occurred in the afternoon of Thursday, 22nd May, 2025 on the underbridge stretch of the Tema Motorway, involving a tipper truck, a red commercial bus, and another passenger vehicle.
The incident happened around the Shiashie-bound section of the motorway and caused panic among drivers and passengers.
Eyewitnesses said the red bus was being driven recklessly, racing with another vehicle to pick up passengers. Both vehicles were moving at high speed and appeared to be in competition. During the chase, a tipper truck that was following them failed to stop in time and crashed into the back of one of the vehicles.
The impact of the crash pushed the passenger vehicle forward into the red bus, resulting in a chain collision. Several passengers sustained injuries, while others escaped without harm. Those injured were assisted by bystanders and later transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Drivers who witnessed the crash expressed concern about the increasing rate of dangerous driving on the motorway. “These commercial drivers are always rushing for passengers. It’s only a matter of time before more lives are lost if nothing is done,” a driver said.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after the incident. Police officers arrived to control traffic and begin investigations into the cause of the crash. The damaged vehicles were later towed away to clear the road for smooth movement.
The Ghana Police Service has urged drivers, especially commercial ones, to avoid speeding and racing for passengers, as such behavior puts lives at great risk. They also encouraged the public to report any reckless driving they witness on the roads.
Meanwhile, authorities have assured that investigations are ongoing and those found responsible will be dealt with according to the law.
