Popular Ghanaian journalist, Afia Pokuaa, also known as Vim Lady, has shared her thoughts on the ongoing decongestion exercise in Accra.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, she warned political parties, especially the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), not to politicize the exercise.
According to her, if this action had taken place before the 2024 general elections, some political groups would have used it as a campaign tool by threatening the government with votes. She believes that people would have said, “We won’t vote,” just to stop the exercise.
Afia Pokuaa questioned why it should take a person five hours to move from Tetteh Quarshie to Accra Central. She blamed the problem on congestion caused by street hawkers and traders who occupy roads and pedestrian paths. She also expressed worry about the dirty state of the city.
“We are proud of how clean Rwanda is, but our own cities are filthy. Why?” she asked.
Vim Lady also had a strong message for media houses and bloggers. She advised them to stop interviewing traders who are complaining about the decongestion exercise. According to her, even though times are hard and many people are struggling, that is not a reason to sell on the streets and cause disorder.
“There is hardship, yes. But should that be a reason to break the law?” she questioned.
She ended her post with the hashtag #decongestion, showing her support for the clean-up and organization of Accra.
Many Ghanaians have shared mixed reactions to her post, but it has sparked a larger conversation about law enforcement, city cleanliness, and the role of politics in everyday issues.
