According to a report by GhOne TV on Sunday, 18th May, 2025, a male boarding student from Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) in Kumasi has been arrested after he was caught with a locally made pistol on campus.
The shocking discovery was made by school authorities during a routine check in the boys’ dormitory. The student was quickly handed over to the police for further investigations.
This incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of students in schools, especially as it comes just a few weeks after a female student from Adventist Senior High School in Bantama was accidentally shot in the eye by her male colleague, also with a locally made pistol.
The Adventist SHS incident, which happened in April 2025, left 16-year-old Suzzy Pinamang permanently blind. She was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and later transferred to Accra for further medical treatment. Businessman Ibrahim Mahama came to her aid and paid for her medical bills.
Now, with another gun found in a different school, parents and education stakeholders are calling for immediate steps to stop weapons from entering school compounds.
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) recently reported that many students have been caught with harmful items such as knives, scissors, and even broken bottles. CHASS and the Ghana Education Service (GES) are urging parents to be more careful about what their children take to school.
The National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) has also called for tighter security measures in schools. They are asking school heads to strengthen checks at school gates and consider employing more security officers.
As police continue their investigations into the OKESS student’s case, Ghanaians are asking serious questions: How are students getting access to guns? And how can schools be made safer?
