Veteran journalist and political commentator Kwesi Pratt Jnr has criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his recent comments on the cedi’s performance.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, Mr. Pratt said Dr. Bawumia has no moral right to talk about the cedi because, according to him, the currency struggled badly under his leadership.
Kwesi Pratt argued that when Bawumia was in charge of the economy as Vice President and head of the Economic Management Team, the Ghana cedi depreciated significantly. “Under his watch, the cedi’s value fell from 3.4 cedis to a dollar to 16 cedis to a dollar. He was in power for eight long years, and at the end of it, the cedi was 17 to a dollar,” he said.
He questioned Dr. Bawumia’s credibility on economic matters, asking, “What right does he have to lecture us about the value of the cedi? What do these politicians take us for?”
Mr. Pratt’s comments come after Dr. Bawumia, the 2024 NPP flagbearer, said the opposition NDC should not take credit for the recent stability of the cedi. Speaking in London, Dr. Bawumia argued that the NDC had not introduced any real policy that could influence the exchange rate. Instead, he credited the gains to policies introduced during his time in office, such as the gold purchase programme.
But Mr. Pratt strongly disagrees. He believes the NDC government, led by President Mahama, has managed the economy better, with the cedi currently trading at 12.10 to a dollar. According to him, Bawumia’s past record disqualifies him from giving lectures on economic success.
