According to a report by Joy News on Monday, 19th May, 2025, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not win the 2028 general elections.
According to him, the NDC will lose because they will be presenting a first-time presidential candidate, and in Ghana, it is often difficult for first-timers to win national elections.
Dr Bawumia made this statement during an address in London, United Kingdom. He explained that in Ghana’s political history, most first-time presidential candidates have failed to win elections. Because of this, he believes the NPP has a stronger chance of returning to power in 2028.
“Most first-time presidential candidates don’t win elections in Ghana. This is one of the main reasons why I believe the NPP will win in 2028,” he said.
However, Dr Bawumia also admitted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) made some mistakes in government, which led to losses in several important constituencies. He openly apologized on behalf of the party.
“The NPP did a lot of work, there’s no doubt about that, but we did not get everything right. We got quite a few things wrong, and I think that, on my own behalf and on behalf of the party, I apologise to all of you for us not getting the figures right,” he said.
Despite these challenges, Dr Bawumia encouraged NPP supporters not to lose hope. He urged the party to stay united and prepare for the future, especially the 2028 elections.
He also mentioned that Ghanaians are beginning to understand and appreciate the NPP’s development policies, such as the Free SHS and digital financial systems.
Political analysts believe Dr Bawumia’s message was meant to encourage the party’s base and assure them that the NPP still has a chance to lead the country again after 2024.
