Many Ghanaians have shared their thoughts and reactions after photos of Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, meeting the new Pope, Leo XIV, were shared online.
The meeting took place at Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican City during the Inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV on Sunday, May 18, 2025. Mr. Ablakwa represented President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana at the important religious ceremony.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page, the North Tongu Member of Parliament expressed how honoured he felt to meet the new pope on behalf of Ghana. He wrote:
“It has been a profound honour representing President John Mahama and Ghana at the Inauguration Mass of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at Saint Peter’s Square today.
I am eternally grateful for the Supreme Pontiff’s blessings and warmth.”
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, is the first American to become pope. He took over the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church following the passing of Pope Francis. His election brought people from different parts of the world, including Ghana, to witness his inauguration.
After Mr. Ablakwa shared the news, many Ghanaians reacted positively on social media. Some praised him for his humility and the way he represented Ghana on the world stage. Others said it was a proud moment to see a Ghanaian leader at such a global event.
The Inauguration Mass was filled with many powerful messages. Pope Leo XIV called for peace, love, and unity in the world. He also encouraged world leaders to work together to help the poor and protect the environment.
Mr. Ablakwa’s meeting with the pope shows Ghana’s strong relationship with the Catholic Church and its importance on the global stage. Many hope that this connection will bring more blessings to Ghana.
