On Sunday, 18th May, 2025, a strong rainfall caused major flooding in Accra and nearby areas, including Tema West. The rain started around 3:00 p.m. and lasted for nearly three hours. Many roads and homes were flooded, making it difficult for people to move around. Areas such as Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adentan-Dodowa, and parts of Tema were badly affected.
One of the hardest-hit places was the Adjei-Kojo Kanewu area in Tema West. Residents there say their homes were filled with water, causing damage to their properties and stopping their daily routines. They are blaming a company called Letap Industries, which makes medicines, for the flooding. According to the residents, the company has blocked the main drainage systems in the community. This makes it hard for rainwater to flow away, so it flows back into their homes instead.
Some of the people spoke to Citi News and begged the government and other authorities to come and look into the issue quickly. “We can’t live like this anymore,” one resident said. “Every time it rains, water enters our homes. The drains are blocked and no one is helping us. We need the government to step in right now.”
In other parts of Accra, roads were also under water. The road from Awudome Roundabout to the Awudome Cemetery and the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange was completely covered by floodwaters. Several vehicles broke down along this stretch. Some young people in the community stepped in to help direct drivers and stop accidents from happening, especially near open drains and hidden potholes.
The floods caused heavy traffic and delayed many people during busy hours. This situation has made it clear that Accra needs better drainage systems and stricter building rules to stop future floods.
Residents are being warned to stay indoors and avoid touching the floodwater, as it may be dirty and dangerous to their health.
