A new survey by Global Info Analytics on Tuesday, 20th May, 2025 shows that most Ghanaians agree with the decision made by President John Mahama to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
The survey, carried out across all 16 regions of Ghana, revealed that 53% of the people who took part support the suspension, while only 20% are against it. Another 12% were neutral, and 15% did not give any opinion.
The Chief Justice was suspended on April 22, 2025, after three different petitions were filed against her. The President took action based on advice that there was enough reason to investigate her. The Constitution of Ghana, in Article 146(6), gives the President the power to form a committee to look into such cases when there is evidence of wrongdoing.
The survey was conducted between May 2 and May 19, 2025, and involved 2,558 registered voters. The possible margin of error is plus or minus 2.51%. It also shows that opinions are divided depending on political party support and region. People from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were more likely to support the suspension, with 87% of NDC supporters backing it. Among floating voters (those who don’t support a specific party), 54% agreed with the move. However, only 13% of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters supported the suspension.
In terms of regions, most of the country agreed with the suspension, except in the North East and Northern Regions, where more people opposed it.
When asked if they would support removing the Chief Justice if the investigations find her guilty of misconduct, only 20% said yes, which is a drop from 30% in April. Meanwhile, 33% said they would still be against her removal, 20% were undecided, and 27% had no opinion.
This poll shows that while many people support the suspension, opinions may change depending on the outcome of the investigation.
