The Director of Passports, Mr. Kwasi Asante, has spoken about news that the Accra High Court has issued a bench warrant for his arrest. The court took this step after it discovered that an accused person, who was on trial, had been given more than eight Ghanaian passports.
In a public statement seen by GhanaWeb on Saturday, 17th May, 2025, Mr. Asante explained that the issue happened long before he became the Director of Passports. He made it clear that he had no hand in the matter and asked the public not to believe any false stories linking him to the incident.
“I want to make it clear that the recent reports about a problem at the Passport Office are not correct. The issue happened before I started work as Director,” Mr. Asante said in his statement. “I ask the public to ignore any false information. I had no role in what happened, and I am focused on doing my job with honesty and transparency,” he added.
According to court documents, although the accused person was later freed after the Attorney-General withdrew the case, the judge still wanted the Director of Passports to come to court. The judge asked for an explanation about how one person was able to receive more than eight passports, which goes against passport regulations.
The bench warrant was issued on Friday, May 16, 2025, after Mr. Asante failed to appear in court as ordered. The documents also showed that Mr. Asante had been officially informed to come to court but did not show up.
Mr. Kwasi Asante was appointed as Director of Passports by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in December 2024. He has promised to support transparency and proper investigations into the matter.
