The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has asked Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to resign from his position as Foreign Affairs Minister.
In a post on X on Friday, 23rd May, 2025, Rev Fordjour said Ablakwa must step down because he failed to honour a promise he made while in opposition.
According to Rev Fordjour, Mr. Ablakwa had promised to resign from any ministerial position if his government ever used a private jet to fly the President or Vice President. He said Mr. Ablakwa made this vow boldly and confidently to the Ghanaian public.
Rev Fordjour reminded the Foreign Affairs Minister that when his party was in opposition, he strongly criticised the use of private jets by the presidency. He accused Ablakwa of making politics look like a game by publicly attacking presidential travels that involved private jets. “You mocked the Presidency, you got praise from your party, and in your excitement, you forgot that sometimes, official duties may require the use of private jets,” he wrote.
He pointed out that the current Vice President recently returned to Ghana using a private jet. According to him, this trip was paid for with taxpayers’ money. He added that this proves Mr. Ablakwa’s own government is now doing what he once condemned.
Rev Fordjour urged Ablakwa to stay true to his words by resigning from his post. He said doing so would show that the Minister is a man of integrity and someone who can be trusted. “Be a man of principles and resign!” he said.
He ended his post by stating that the use of private jets by the President or Vice President is not a crime, especially when the official presidential jet is not available.
