The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Mr. Mussa Dankwah, has advised President John Dramani Mahama to be careful not to repeat the past mistakes of previous governments if he truly wants to reset the country.
Mr. Dankwah made this statement on his official Facebook page on Saturday, May 24, 2025. His comment came after the arrest of Alfred Kumi, a former student leader and known critic of the ruling government. According to reports, Mr. Kumi was arrested under unclear circumstances, which has raised concerns among civil society groups and human rights activists.
In his short but powerful message, Mussa Dankwah wrote: “Alfred Kumi’s arrest for whatever charge or reason could have been done by invitation. Avoid past mistakes if we are resetting.”
Mr. Dankwah’s post suggests that the government could have used a more peaceful and respectful way to handle the issue instead of arresting Mr. Kumi. He believes inviting him for questioning would have shown maturity and a clear difference from how similar matters were handled in the past.
His statement has drawn public attention because it comes at a time when the new administration led by President Mahama is preaching a message of “Resetting the Nation.” Many people expected this new beginning to include better treatment of critics and a stronger respect for human rights.
Some Ghanaians who reacted to Mr. Dankwah’s post agreed with his point. They believe that if the government wants to rebuild public trust and reset the system, then it must set a good example in how it treats all citizens, including those who disagree with it.
This incident has once again raised questions about the use of power and the protection of civil liberties in Ghana. It remains to be seen how the government will respond to these concerns going forward.
