The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) is in deep sorrow following the tragic death of one of its respected lecturers, Professor Koku Mawuadem Amedeker.
The late professor was a well-known physicist and an important member of the university’s academic staff.
According to reports, Prof. Amedeker was found dead at his private home in Gyahadzi, a community in the Efutu Municipality of Ghana’s Central Region. His family became worried after they lost contact with him and quickly reported the matter to the police.
Following this, a search operation was carried out, which sadly led to the discovery of his body buried within his own compound. The Ghana Police Service suspects that the professor may have been killed during a robbery attack.
So far, one person has been arrested by the police as investigations continue. The university has praised the police for their quick response and is hopeful that all persons involved in this heartbreaking crime will be found and punished.
UEW is also calling on members of the public to assist the police with any information that could help solve the case.
In a statement signed by the Registrar on Sunday, 25th May, 2025, the university extended its deepest sympathy to the family of the late professor. “We mourn with them and pray for comfort and strength during this very painful time,” the statement said.
The university has also assured students, staff, and all stakeholders that their safety remains a top priority. Management says it is working closely with security agencies to improve safety on and around its campuses.
UEW further promised to update the public as investigations progress. The university community now mourns the loss of a brilliant academic and a kind soul.
