On Monday, May 26, 2025, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, better known as Chairman Wontumi, visited the Police Headquarters in Accra. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). His visit was to respond to an invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning.
Chairman Wontumi did not go alone. He was accompanied by his lawyer, who is also the former Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame. Also with them was Andy Appiah-Kubi, the former Member of Parliament for Asante-Akim North. Their presence at the Police Headquarters attracted a lot of public and media attention.
This visit comes just a few days after a failed attempt by a team made up of National Security and police officers to arrest Wontumi at his house on Friday, May 23. That operation was captured in videos shared on social media, which showed armed men surrounding his residence. Many people, especially his supporters, believe that the attempt to arrest him was politically motivated.
As of now, the Ghana Police Service has not officially stated why Chairman Wontumi was invited. However, information from sources close to the situation suggests that the questioning may be related to investigations involving Akonta Mining. The company has been accused of engaging in illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey,” and Wontumi’s name has come up in connection with it.
The situation has raised a lot of concern among the public, especially within political circles. Some people believe the recent actions against Wontumi may be part of a larger political game, while others think it is simply law enforcement doing its job.
