Veteran Ghanaian journalist and political commentator, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has raised concerns about the frequent use of long convoys and sirens in Accra, which he believes are becoming a nuisance on the roads. He said that he was not happy with what he sees on the streets of Accra.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, 26th May, 2025, Kwesi Pratt expressed frustration over the increasing number of vehicles using loud sirens and moving in long convoys, often pushing other road users aside and causing confusion. According to him, these sirens are now a common feature in Accra traffic, scaring drivers and forcing them off the road.
“We have been told countless times that only the President, Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, and Chief Justice are allowed to use sirens. So why are they everywhere, disturbing the peace of motorists?” he asked.
Kwesi Pratt said that many people are left wondering who the occupants of these siren-blaring convoys are, especially since they are often aggressive and inconsiderate in traffic. He added that these convoys do not just cause fear but also delay ordinary Ghanaians who are trying to go about their daily activities.
He went on to call on the Ghana Police Service to take urgent steps to address the issue. “Will the police take action to restore some sanity on our roads?” he questioned.
Many Ghanaians have also expressed similar concerns in recent times. Some believe that the abuse of sirens and convoys is a sign of lawlessness and disrespect for traffic regulations. Others have called for stricter enforcement of the rules on who can use sirens and how they should behave in traffic.
