Pictures showing how Ghana’s new road toll system will work have been released, and many Ghanaians are reacting with surprise and excitement.
The new system will not include the usual tollbooths that cause long queues and delays on the roads. Instead, tolls will be paid automatically through mobile money or bank accounts.
According to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the new toll system will use technology and the Ghana Card to make toll payments easier and faster. Every vehicle in the country has now been linked to its owner’s Ghana Card. So, when a car crosses a toll location, like the East Legon Bridge where a camera will capture the number plate, and the toll will be charged instantly.
The money will be deducted from the owner’s mobile money or bank account. This means drivers no longer have to stop at tollbooths or wait in traffic to pay fees. President Mahama said, “No tollbooths. No traffic. No delays. Just seamless billing powered by tech and national ID integration.”
This new toll collection system is part of Mahama’s plan to make Ghana’s roads smarter and reduce stress for drivers. It will also help the government collect tolls more efficiently without the need for cash collectors at toll stations.
Many people believe this move could help stop corruption at toll points and ensure all tolls are paid directly into government accounts. The pictures shared online show how the new system will be installed, with high-tech cameras and sensors placed at bridges and other key points.
Ghanaians are now waiting to see when the new toll system will begin and how well it will work in practice.
