The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that the Embassy of Ghana in Washington DC, United States, will officially reopen on Thursday, May 29, 2025. This comes after a temporary shutdown of the mission following serious internal issues.
According to the Ministry, the problems at the Embassy led to the recall of staff from Ghana and the suspension of local workers in the United States. In response, a team of experienced diplomats has been sent to Washington DC to take over operations and lead a complete overhaul of the Embassy’s systems and services.
The Ministry stated that the new team will work to restore integrity and ensure that the Embassy functions properly and transparently. One of the major actions already taken includes the deployment of an Information Technology (IT) team to upgrade the Embassy’s website and payment systems. The aim is to remove all unauthorized and unofficial links that may have been connected to the Embassy’s digital platforms.
The Ministry explained that the reopening will allow the Embassy to clear the backlog of pending requests and continue its work of serving Ghanaians in the United States and other clients. They expressed regret for the inconvenience the temporary closure may have caused.
In addition, the Ministry revealed that the issues which led to the closure have been reported to the Auditor-General and the Attorney-General of Ghana. These institutions are expected to investigate the matter and recommend appropriate actions, including possible sanctions against any persons found responsible for misconduct.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured the public that it is committed to improving service delivery, promoting accountability, and protecting Ghana’s image on the international stage. The reopening of the Washington DC Embassy is seen as a step forward in rebuilding trust and ensuring better diplomatic services abroad.
