According to a report by UTV on Tuesday, 27th May, 2025, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reiterated his stance that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) did not secure victory in the 2024 general elections by their own merit. Instead, he attributes the NPP’s loss to internal challenges and voter apathy within his party.
Speaking during his ongoing “Thank You Tour”, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the NDC’s electoral success was not due to a significant increase in their support base. He pointed out that the NDC’s vote count remained relatively consistent with previous elections, while the NPP experienced a substantial decline in voter turnout.
“The NDC didn’t win because their figures from 2020 didn’t change in 2024. Our votes dropped by 40%. The analysis is simple: we effectively handed them power through voter apathy. This is a self-inflicted loss,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted that approximately 2.1 million NPP supporters abstained from voting in the 2024 elections, a factor he believes was pivotal in the party’s defeat.
He also acknowledged that internal divisions and public criticisms among party members were detrimental during the 2024 campaign. “Our own utterances against each other were used against us,” he noted, emphasizing the need for unity and internal cohesion within the NPP.
Despite the setback, Dr. Bawumia remains optimistic about the NPP’s future prospects. He urged party members to move beyond blame and focus on rebuilding, stating, “This is not about individual ambition; it’s about strengthening the NPP for the future. We may have lost the battle, but we have not lost the war. United, by the grace of God, we will win in 2028.”
The 2024 general elections concluded with former President John Dramani Mahama of the NDC winning with 56.55% of the vote, while Dr. Bawumia secured 41.61%.
