According to a report by Ghana National Fire Service on Friday, 30th May, 2025, one person has died and nine others have been rescued in a serious accident that happened on the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway near Elmina.
According to the Central Region Public Relations Office of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the crash involved a Toyota Hiace minibus with registration number GR 1464-18 and a Zonda truck with registration number GN 4197-21.
Firefighters from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Fire Station quickly arrived at the scene after receiving a distress call. The team, led by ADO I Halm, worked hard to secure the area and control traffic. They also called for more help from the Regional Headquarters Rescue Team.
The rescue operation was carried out under the direction of the Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Merinder Mary Attiga-Mensah. Together, the teams successfully rescued nine people who were trapped in the vehicle. These survivors were immediately handed over to the National Ambulance Service and rushed to the UCC Hospital for treatment.
Unfortunately, one passenger was found unresponsive and later confirmed dead. The driver of the Toyota Hiace survived with only minor injuries.
Initial investigations show that the crash was caused by wrongful overtaking by the Toyota Hiace driver. The minibus was badly damaged in the accident, while the Zonda truck had less damage.
The Ghana National Fire Service is reminding all road users to drive safely and avoid careless driving to help reduce road accidents.
