The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has been taken to the hospital after being arrested and questioned by security officers.
His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, who is also a Member of Parliament, told the media that Chairman Wontumi got sick during the police interrogation. Because of this, the officers had to stop the process and rush him to a hospital for medical care. He made this information in the late hours of Tuesday, 27th May, 2025.
“My client is now at the hospital receiving treatment,” Mr Appiah-Kubi said. “The questioning is not yet complete, so we will continue later—possibly tomorrow—if his health gets better. If not, he will stay in the hospital until the doctors say he can leave.”
Wontumi’s arrest has caused tension within the NPP. Party leaders say the arrest seemed like an attempt to intimidate him. They explained that Wontumi was already at the police CID headquarters to answer some questions when heavily armed and masked officers suddenly took him away for more questioning.
So far, the specific accusations against Wontumi have not been made clear. However, his lawyer confirmed that the police had raised some concerns, which Wontumi had already responded to before he fell sick.
In another development, Mr Appiah-Kubi also shared that Wontumi had earlier received a writ of summons from Exim Bank. This means he is also facing a civil legal issue apart from the criminal investigation.
He made it clear that the Exim Bank case is not criminal but a civil matter, and they will respond to it in court. “We are confident we can defend him,” he added.
Chairman Wontumi’s sudden illness and hospitalisation have added more tension to an already heated political situation. Some NPP leaders, like National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, believe the arrest was politically motivated and a reminder of past political oppression.
