Samuel Koku Anyidoho, who started the Atta Mills Institute, has shown deep appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for naming the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) after the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
UHAS was set up in December 2011 through a law passed by Parliament. It was created during the time of President Atta Mills to be a top health and research university that also helps communities. In 2012, President Atta Mills himself started the building of the main campus at Sokode Lokoe in the Ho District. He said he wanted every part of Ghana, including the Volta Region, to have good public universities.
Koku Anyidoho, who worked closely with President Mills, believes the decision by President Mahama to rename UHAS is a great way to honour the memory of Atta Mills. He said, “Keeping the legacy of President Atta Mills alive has not been easy, but this news from President Mahama makes me very happy. I am truly thankful and would love to thank him in person.”
He added that this action is not just about honouring someone—it can also help bring the members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) together. Both President Mahama and the late Atta Mills were members of the NDC.
Koku shared one of Atta Mills’ favourite quotes: “A nation that does not honour its heroes is not worth dying for.” He said this quote shows why it’s so important to celebrate great leaders like Atta Mills.
He also reminded everyone that the law that created UHAS made it clear that it should always focus on health and science. He believes that President Mills’ dream has now been fulfilled and that this act brings peace to his soul.
