On Tuesday, May 27th, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Côte d’Ivoire to take part in the 2025 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group.
These important meetings are being held in Abidjan, the capital city, and serve as a platform where influential African leaders, development experts, and representatives from various financial institutions come together. The aim is to deliberate on Africa’s development challenges, economic growth prospects, and future initiatives that can drive progress across the continent.
President Mahama traveled to Côte d’Ivoire aboard a private jet named “Dzata,” which is owned by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama. A video posted by GHOne TV showed the jet’s landing, highlighting this mode of transport. Upon his arrival, the President was warmly welcomed by senior government officials, with a ceremonial red carpet greeting at the airport. The choice of using a private aircraft belonging to a family member has attracted public attention, especially amid ongoing discussions regarding Ghana’s official presidential jet.
The current presidential aircraft, a Falcon 900EX, was acquired during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor. This jet has faced criticism for being outdated and unsuitable for long-distance travel, raising safety concerns. Consequently, the present government has sought alternatives to ensure the President’s travel needs are met efficiently. The use of the private “Dzata” jet has thus emerged as a practical and immediate solution.
While some critics have questioned the appropriateness of the President utilizing a private jet owned by his brother, government officials have defended the decision. They argue that this arrangement is cost-effective for the nation and guarantees the President’s secure and timely travel.
Although there were earlier discussions about replacing the aging presidential aircraft, no decisive actions were taken under the previous administration. Since assuming office in January 2025, President Mahama’s government has yet to announce plans for acquiring a new official plane.
At the AfDB Annual Meetings, President Mahama is expected to participate in vital discussions centered on Africa’s economic growth, sustainable development strategies, and collaborative financial efforts to enhance the continent’s progress and prosperity.
