Raymond Archer is the man currently leading the high-profile investigation into the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Acting Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), and under his leadership, Wontumi has been kept at the EOCO headquarters for questioning over serious allegations.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, after reporting to the CID headquarters in Accra. After the CID’s session, EOCO officials picked him up for further investigations. Wontumi is being investigated for fraud, money laundering, causing financial loss to the state, and illegal mining activities linked to his company, Akonta Mining.
Raymond Archer is no stranger to uncovering wrongdoing. Before entering public office, he was one of Ghana’s most respected investigative journalists. In 2005, he became the first African and the youngest person to win the Global Gold Medal for Excellence in Journalism from the International Federation of Journalists. He also won the Lorenzo Natali Prize for Excellence in African Journalism and was twice named Ghana’s Best Investigative Journalist.
Archer has worked internationally in intelligence and security consulting, with over 15 years of experience. He has worked with big organizations like KPMG and Kroll in Europe and has helped train anti-corruption officers across Africa and the Middle East. He is also a Certified Counter Fraud Specialist and is currently studying Artificial Intelligence at the University of Texas.
He played a key role in creating the law that formed EOCO in 2010 and is now using that same law to fight corruption and recover state assets under the new “Operation Recover All Loot” initiative launched by President John Mahama.
Despite claims from some NPP supporters that the arrest is political, Raymond Archer insists that the investigation is not personal. According to him, EOCO is acting based on public interest and not on political pressure.
