A serious road accident happened on Friday, May 30, 2025, at Atwedie in the Asante Akim South Municipality of the Ashanti Region. Two people sadly died, and three others were rescued by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The first accident occurred when a container truck with registration number WR 1679-Z had a brake failure. The truck veered into the path of an oncoming truck from Burkina Faso, which was loaded with cloth and registered as 11 JN 2972. The two vehicles crashed head-on.
Unfortunately, the driver and conductor of the container truck died from the crash. Other injured people were rushed to the hospital before the fire service team arrived.
While the GNFS officers were still working at the scene, another accident happened. A second truck, also heading to Burkina Faso and carrying cashew seeds, also lost its brakes. The truck, registered BF 2389 D 03, overturned on the road.
The rescuers acted quickly and broke the windscreen of the second truck to rescue three people who were trapped inside. These three were saved and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Firefighters from the Ejisu and Juaso Fire Stations handled the situation with professionalism. They worked together with other agencies to clean the road, removing oil and fuel spills using foam concentrate. Their quick actions helped restore traffic and prevented more accidents.
This incident has once again raised concerns about the condition of heavy trucks on Ghana’s roads and the need for strict safety checks to prevent such disasters.
The Ghana National Fire Service has praised the efforts of its officers and asked drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before traveling, especially on long-distance journeys.
