There is finally some good news for Ghanaians, especially those in the construction industry. Cement prices, which have remained high for several months, have now started to drop following the improvement in the cedi’s exchange rate against the dollar.
As of Monday, 2nd June 2025, the price of cement has reduced and is now selling between GHS 110 and GHS 115 in many parts of the country. In some shops, the price is still around GHS 120, but this is a significant improvement compared to the previous range of GHS 120 to GHS 130 per bag.
This development comes after weeks of calls from the public for cement prices to be reduced, especially as the exchange rate has improved. The cedi is now trading at GHS 10.2 to the dollar, a big improvement from the previous rate of around GHS 16.
According to cement sellers, the drop in prices is because most of them have now cleared their old stock, which was purchased at a higher exchange rate. New stock bought at the current, lower exchange rate is now available, allowing them to reduce prices.
A seller at a hardware store in Accra said, “We have started receiving new bags at better prices, so we can now sell a bit cheaper. We are happy, and our customers are happy too.”
Many Ghanaians are hopeful that the price will reduce even further in the coming weeks, especially if the cedi remains strong against the dollar. For now, builders and homeowners can smile as the cost of cement is finally going down.
This price drop is a relief to many, and it is expected to ease the pressure on those planning construction projects across the country.
