Did you know that there’s a single forest reserve in Ghana that is bigger than the entire Greater Accra Region?
The Mole National Park, which is a forest is located in the Savannah Region of northern Ghana, is larger in land size than Ghana’s most populous and urbanized region, Greater Accra.
Greater Accra, the region that houses the capital city of Ghana, spans an area of about 3,245 square kilometers. It is the smallest region in Ghana in terms of land area, but the most densely populated.
On the other hand, Mole National Park covers an incredible land area of approximately 4,577 square kilometers — making it over 1,300 km² bigger than Greater Accra.
This surprising fact came to light in a recent video that went viral on social media. In the video, a Ghanaian man pointed out this fascinating size comparison between the Mole Park and Greater Accra. Many people were skeptical at first, but after checking official figures, it turns out to be absolutely true.
Mole National Park is not just big but it’s also one of Ghana’s most important nature reserves. It is home to elephants, antelopes, baboons, warthogs, and hundreds of bird species. The park is a key tourist attraction and a vital ecosystem that plays a role in climate regulation and biodiversity conservation.
This discovery is a reminder of how rich and vast Ghana’s natural resources are. While Accra represents the political and economic heart of the country, parks like Mole show us the deep environmental wealth Ghana possesses in the north.
