According to a report by Citi FM on Monday, 2nd June, 2025, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been hit with sad news as former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is reported to be seriously ill. He will not be able to appear before the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Monday, June 2, 2025, as earlier planned.
According to his lawyers, Mr. Ofori-Atta’s health has worsened. Medical reports show that he may need to undergo surgery. His legal team has informed both the OSP and the Human Rights Court about his health condition. They have also asked for him to be allowed to take part in the investigations virtually, using an online platform, while he receives treatment.
The OSP has not yet released a new statement on whether they will agree to this request. However, there is growing tension, as the OSP earlier suggested that Mr. Ofori-Atta may be declared wanted again if he fails to show up in person.
Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently involved in five investigations by the OSP. These include the SML deal with the GRA, the canceled ECG contract with a Chinese company, the National Cathedral funds, the ambulance procurement case, and the GRA’s Tax P-Fund.
This case has been ongoing since January 2025. At that time, the OSP officially named him as a suspect. After failing to return to Ghana on time due to medical reasons, he was declared a fugitive. He later gave a return date and was removed from the wanted list.
In March 2025, Mr. Ofori-Atta filed a lawsuit against the OSP, saying he was wrongly declared wanted. The Human Rights Court will rule on the matter on June 18, 2025.
This latest news about his health has shocked many Ghanaians and added more uncertainty to his legal battle. It also comes at a time when the NPP is under pressure, making it a worrying situation for the party.
