The La District Court has penalized 24 Nigerian commercial sex workers for soliciting sex in Osu, Accra.
They are Favour David, 20, Nancy Victor, 23, Angel Isaiah, 23, Gloria Uyi, 27, Chukwuma Olivia Chinyere, 22, Jennifer James, 27, Matilda Samuel, 28, Ogbona Success, 23 and Ibeh Mary, 20.
Others are Berry Michael, 23, Angel Mbah, 23, Eze Jane, 23, Jenny Daniel, 23, Joy Timothy, 24, Comfort James, 23, Eze Kelly, 24, Lilian Ikpomwosa, 26 and Joy Bolle, 22.
All of the defendants pleaded guilty to the allegation of soliciting or impersonating a prostitute.
They were convicted based on their own plea.
The Court also issued deportation orders for the offenders to return to their home countries.
The Court also charged the police with coordinating with the Ghana Immigration Service in order to deport all of the offenders.
According to the information supplied by Police Chief Inspector Doris Darko, the convicted were all Nigerians.
According to the prosecution, the prisoners’ actions as prostitutes have been causing a nuisance to members of the community in Osu, an Accra suburb, for some time now.
It was stated that on July 23, 2023, at approximately 2200 hours, the Police launched an exercise to crackdown on the operations of commercial sex workers and arrested them from various sites throughout Osu in the act of soliciting and importing as prostitutes.
According to the prosecution, they admitted to the crime in their caution statements during the inquiry.
