Rebecca Naa Dedei Aryeetey, also called Dedei Ashikishan, was a successful businesswoman, a political activist, and a supporter of women’s rights in Ghana. She is the woman on Ghana’s 50 pesewas coin.
She was born in 1923 and sadly passed away at a young age on June 22, 1961, when she was just 38 years old. Her death happened during a political event organized by the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in Ho. It is believed that she was poisoned after drinking hot tea when she complained of stomach pain. Some people suspect that her close relationship with Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, made her a target for rival political groups.
Naa Dedei began her business career right after completing basic school. She lived in James Town, a part of Accra, and quickly became known as the “Flour Queen.” She also led the Market Women’s Association. At just 30 years old, she was already a strong and respected figure in business and politics.
She used her money and influence to support the CPP and helped Kwame Nkrumah win his first seat in Parliament. Her financial help and campaigning were key in helping Nkrumah become Prime Minister. Many believe that without her help, Nkrumah might not have succeeded.
Even though she was not married and had no children, she gave her time, energy, and money to fight for Ghana’s freedom. Sadly, her story is not well known, and many people don’t realize the important role she played in Ghana’s history.
In 2007, when Ghana’s currency was changed, the new 50 pesewas coin was made. To honor her memory, her image was chosen to be on the coin.
