Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a lawyer and human rights activist, has expressed his views on the letter released by the former Director General of the National Signal Bureau, Kwabena Adu Boahen, from EOCO cells.
Oliver Barker wrote down some points that he finds strange about Adu-Boahene’s defense strategy
Oliver Barker-Vormawor made this comment in a post shared on his Facebook page on 8th May, 2025. He wrote:
“He says that he refused to inform investigators (state agency) about these details when he was being interrogated, because they were classified but he has now released that information through his lawyers into the Public domain.
So that we who have no security clearance will do what with it? You couldn’t say as much at any point, not even during the periods you were on bail. You didn’t go to see the National Security Coordinator and flag the risk of national security disclosures. You didn’t seek audience with the AGs through your lawyers; and say that “careful, the BNC is actually a covert vehicle.”
Oliver Barker added that, Adutwum Boahen didn’t think that he made up the details of the operations he has released publicly. That’s a question that mustn’t be swept under the Carpet and which we must interrogate independently!
A national security operation released in the public domain by no less a person that a former head of agency, provides a rare public moment to scrutinise the State and underhand dealings.
“However, the real trick here is that, he lists these real operations and suggest that all the money he is said to have embezzled were actually used officially not privately.
However, there is absolutely no evidence that the monies allegedly embezzled and the monies used for these possibly true activities are the same! The claim by his lawyers that he has some immunity under the State and Intelligence Agencies is preposterous and seems like blackmail justice.
In fact, my fear is that unauthorised disclosures, if not relevant to excluding criminal liability opens him up potentially for more consequences. A former Security Czar must have the maturity and emotional intelligence to avoid playing to the gallery in highly contentious security matters. Not even when your life is in peril.” Oliver Barker added.
Oliver Barker concluded that National security is largely covert but not a black hole. Auditors with security clearances can and must unravel those transactions. No one has power to spend state funds without accountability.
