According to a report by GBC on Tuesday, 20th May, 2025, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, after falling ill during a court hearing in Accra. As a result, the court has postponed the Sky Train case to Monday, May 26, 2025.
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, who has been charged in connection with a failed Sky Train project, was in court for the ongoing trial when he suddenly became unwell. Court officials quickly arranged for him to be taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
He is facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and causing financial loss to the state. The charges are based on a $2 million payment made in 2019 to Africa Investor Holdings Limited. The payment was intended to support the development of an urban Sky Train system in Accra, a project that never took off.
Court documents reveal that the $2 million, which belonged to the GIIF, was paid without the proper approval from the GIIF Board. Investigators say this decision broke important financial rules and have launched criminal proceedings. Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi is the second accused in the case. He claims he approved the payment based on a recommendation from the first accused, Solomon Asamoah, the then CEO of the GIIF.
Neither of the two accused has been able to explain what happened to the funds.
The Sky Train project was planned as a modern light rail system to help reduce traffic in Accra. It was supposed to be a partnership between Ghana and a South African company, but the project never materialized despite the large upfront payment.
The court is expected to continue the case on May 26, while Ghanaians wait to see how the matter will be resolved.
