A Facebook post by Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Wednesday, 21st May, 2025, has accused Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), of spreading false information about the exchange rate between the dollar and the cedi.
In his post, Mr. Aboagye stated that Sammy Gyamfi wrongly claimed the exchange rate was GH₵16 to $1 as of January 7, 2025. He said the real rate on that day was GH₵14.70. He described Sammy Gyamfi’s statement as false and misleading.
He added that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia only deals with facts and not propaganda. According to Mr. Aboagye, Dr. Bawumia is calling on the current government, led by President John Mahama, to explain what they have done in the past 120 days to support the cedi apart from using the $10.6 billion in foreign reserves.
He revealed that by the end of 2024, Ghana had around $9 billion in reserves, which he claimed was built up by the previous NPP government. He believes the NDC government is now enjoying the benefits of the hard work done by the NPP administration.
Mr. Aboagye further noted that it is fair for a government to take credit when the currency performs well. However, he said it is not acceptable for people like Sammy Gyamfi to lie about facts such as the exchange rate just to score political points.
He ended his message by reminding Sammy Gyamfi that he is now part of a ruling government and should focus on working to improve the lives of Ghanaians instead of acting like an opposition communicator.
