The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has proposed to President John Dramani Mahama that all donations meant for the National Cathedral project should be redirected to the newly launched Mahama Cares initiative.
He made this suggestion in a Facebook post on Saturday, 17th May 2025.
In his post, Dr. Amoakohene said, “I move that all donations to the National Cathedral be redirected to the Mahama Cares initiative to support critical needs.”
The Mahama Cares initiative, officially known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, was recently launched by President John Dramani Mahama at the University of Ghana Medical Centre. The aim of the initiative is to support Ghanaians suffering from serious and long-term illnesses such as cancer, kidney failure, stroke, and diabetes. Many Ghanaians have praised the initiative for bringing hope to people who cannot afford expensive medical treatments.
Dr. Amoakohene believes that it is more important to invest in health and save lives than to continue with the National Cathedral project, which has already received millions of cedis in donations but remains unfinished. He argued that the Mahama Cares initiative meets the urgent needs of the people and deserves national support.
His suggestion has started a debate on social media and in public discussions. Some people agree with him, saying that the government must focus on the health of its citizens. Others believe the Cathedral is also an important national project and should not be abandoned.
Many are now asking: should Ghana continue spending money on a religious building while many citizens are dying because they cannot pay for medical treatment? The answer to that question may shape future government decisions.
Dr. Amoakohene’s call is clear that Ghana should prioritize health and save lives through the Mahama Cares initiative. Whether Ghanaians agree or disagree, the conversation has begun.
