There was tension on Friday morning as armed security officers reportedly stormed the home of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The news was made public by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Koduah. In a post on his Facebook page on Friday, 23rd May, 2025, Mr. Koduah revealed that the operation was carried out by a group of heavily armed security men. He did not give full details, but said the officers arrived at Wontumi’s residence in large numbers and surrounded the premises.
According to early reports, the incident is believed to be connected to ongoing legal issues involving Chairman Wontumi’s mining company, Akonta Mining Limited. The company has recently come under public and legal scrutiny over alleged illegal mining activities. The company has denied any wrongdoing, but investigations are still ongoing.
Eyewitnesses in the area say they saw several armed men around Wontumi’s house, and some were carrying weapons. It is unclear whether Chairman Wontumi himself was home at the time or whether he has been arrested.
Many NPP supporters have taken to social media to express their shock and anger. Some party members are calling on the government to come clean about the sudden rise in arrests and security operations involving top NPP figures.
This development comes shortly after the arrest of another NPP member, Alfred Ababio Kumi (also known as Adenta Kumi), by masked NIB officers at his home. That arrest was linked to a petition he filed against the committee investigating the Chief Justice.
Ghanaians are watching closely as these events unfold, with some worrying about what these actions mean for justice, fairness, and political stability in the country.
