One of the leading members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former presidential hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, was seen at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
His visit comes just a day after the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, was arrested and taken in for questioning by state security officers.
Kennedy Agyapong’s appearance at EOCO caused a stir, especially among staff and observers present. According to eyewitnesses, he arrived in the morning and was seen warmly greeting some EOCO officers. He appeared calm and confident, taking time to shake hands and exchange pleasantries with those around.
Although the reason for his visit has not been officially confirmed, many believe it may be connected to the ongoing developments involving Chairman Wontumi. The Ashanti Regional Chairman was rushed to the hospital on Monday after he reportedly fell ill during interrogation. His lawyer and Member of Parliament, Andy Appiah-Kubi, later confirmed that his health condition led to the suspension of the questioning.
The arrest and hospitalisation of Wontumi have raised concerns within the NPP, with several party leaders claiming the action is politically motivated. Some say it reminds them of the past, where political opponents were unfairly targeted. National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, has already expressed disappointment and called the arrest a form of intimidation.
Kennedy Agyapong, who is known for his bold and outspoken nature, has not yet made any public statement about his visit to EOCO. However, political observers believe his presence there could be a show of solidarity with Chairman Wontumi or a way to gather first-hand information.
The NPP has said it will continue to cooperate with state institutions but has also warned that it will not sit quietly if its members are unfairly treated.
